Superior cerca del límite con Canadá y fue declarado sitio histórico nacional en 1951 y monumento nacional en 1958.
Cubre un sendero por tierra de 14 km (9 mi) desde la ribera norte del lago Superior que permitía salvar los obstáculos que se debían enfrentar al recorrerlo en canoa. Usado por los primeros exploradores, el transporte por tierra marcaba el final del viaje por los
Grandes Lagos y el comienzo de la ruta fluvial interior. El sendero del transporte por tierra, ahora divide la reserva de la tribu de Grand Portage de los indios chippewas de Minnesota.
